An Industry and Government Technology Event

How to Be a WTS Speaker

Speaking at the IEEE World Technology Summit is a profound opportunity for researchers. The audience will include many product developers who will want to use your research in creating their next-generation products.

Speak Beyond Expectations

A WTS speaker goes beyond the straightforward presentation of an area of work, as is typical at many research conferences. You are expected to show broad expertise, beyond one narrow area, and to explain technological solutions and their pluses and minuses. Of course, you can conclude with your recommendation for the approach that will be most appropriate in assisting the industry to solve problems.

Key points for WTS speakers to keep in mind:

  • TOPICS LIST: Consult the topics list on this web site. While your presentation is not limited to these exact topics, it should at least relate in some way. Remember: this list came from the industry groups looking for solutions who will be listening to your talk. Consider how your talk can help them.
  • Once you have decided on a topic, summarize the active research in that area and prepare to discuss possible solutions or strategies aimed at finding solutions.
  • Do not expect the audience to be familiar with the literature in this area. Include background and context in your presentation.
  • We allow more time than a typical IEEE event for a quality comprehensive presentation.

Speaker Planning

Speaker planning for WTS differs from that of many other IEEE events. Read closely for our speaker plan:

  1. Keynotes are by senior speakers who will scope the problem space without focusing on a single company’s solutions.
  2. Plenary Speakers are executives (VP or C-level) who can paint a picture that combines technical challenge with business implications.
  3. Other session speakers will be:

       a. Speakers who have researched and analyzed the issue and can present data describing the different challenges
       b. Speakers who have researched one of the topic areas and can present an overall solution strategy following the principles in the presentation example under speakers.

About training sessions: If you decide to offer training sessions, keep in mind that these are for working engineers and managers to understand the technology and its uses. A training session’s goal is to provide information an employee can apply to their work to make challenging products and support them.

Sample Presentation

To help provide an idea of the scope of an ideal presentation, please download and review the attached sample outline of a hypothetical presentation on system cooling. Note that it starts with a broad discussion of the areas needed to address this problem and its requirements. Then the focus should be on a particular area where your expertise shines.  Expect challenging questions.  The more complete your presentation, the better your opportunity.
